D’Adamo, creator of the Geno Type Diet, researched the origins of each human blood type and constructed eating plans to optimize health and help dieters lose excess weight. The Type- O diet focuses on the needs of individuals with type O blood. Diets have also been created for those with types A, B and AB as well. As primitive hunter- gather explorers, Type Os have hyper- reactive immune responses and are prone to digestive sensitivities. Type Os also tend to store calories as fat and may have trouble with appetite regulation and maintaining an active metabolism. Dr. Michael Lam suggests Type- O dieters incorporate beef, lamb, vela and venison into their diet. Fish like cod, herring and mackerel are also recommended. Type Os should avoid bacon, ham, goose, pork, catfish and smoked salmon. Type Os respond well to oils, according to Dr. The most beneficial are olive and flaxseed oils, but canola and sesame oil are allowed as well. Corn, peanut and cottonseed oils should be avoided. Type Os should limit their consumption of dairy and eggs. Butter, yogurt and lean cheeses are allowed, but should be consumed only in moderation. D'Adamo advises that Type Os of African origin should avoid dairy and eggs altogether. Beans, though high in fiber and protein, are not recommended for Type Os. Lam states that these foods make muscle tissue less acidic and may even block the metabolism of other nutrients. If beans are included in the diet, Type Os should choose pinto beans or black- eyed peas. The most beneficial vegetables for Type- O dieters include artichoke, garlic, kale, leeks, onions, red peppers pumpkin and sweet potatoes. Eggplants and potatoes are not recommended because it is believed that they contribute to arthritis. Corn is not recommended, as it adversely affects insulin regulation. Plums, prunes, figs and limited amounts of grapefruit are the only fruits type Os should eat. Highly acidic fruits like oranges and strawberries may irritate the stomach lining. Melons and cantaloupes tend to have high mold counts, which may lead to allergy problems. Type Os should drink plenty of water, seltzer water, club soda and tea. Beer and wine are fine in moderation. What’s really in that giant bag of dry dog kibble or that tiny can of food your kitty seems addicted to? Commercial Pet Food is Loosely Regulated. You may not be aware that unlike the food you eat, there’s very little government regulation of pet food quality. The USDA doesn’t control it, nor does the FDA or the AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials). Not one of these agencies watches over what private pet food manufacturers put in their products. The Biggest Drawback to Feeding Homemade. As an integrative wellness veterinarian who understands the vital connection between nutrition and health, I applaud all pet parents who make the commitment to prepare and feed only a homemade diet to their pets. But here’s the rub – if you’re going the homemade route, you must do it right. And by right, I mean balanced. A growing problem in my practice is pets with compromised health as the result of being fed an unbalanced homemade diet. Even with the best intentions, if you switch your dog or cat to an unbalanced homemade diet, you can do a great deal of damage to their health – which is exactly what you are trying to avoid by serving homemade in the first place. I’ll discuss how to avoid this pitfall shortly. Human Grade Food: It’s Not Just for Humans. Unless the commercial dog or cat food you’re buying is made with human- grade ingredients, you are feeding your pet rendered protein. Rendered meat is essentially pieces and parts of this animal or that - - there’s really no telling. This low quality protein is less than desirable nutrition for your pet. Unfortunately, commercial pet food made entirely with human- grade ingredients is usually at least three times as expensive as food containing crude protein. This is one of the main reasons for switching your pet to a homemade diet. You have complete control over what goes into your dog’s or cat’s mouth, and you can insure you’re feeding high quality, human- grade protein and not the crude, pieces- and- parts variety. Get the Grain Out. Another reason to consider feeding a balanced homemade diet is that you can insure it is species- appropriate for your pet. Many pet owners today are becoming more knowledgeable about what constitutes biologically correct nutrition for companion animals. For example, many of you realize your carnivorous dog or kitty should not be fed carbohydrates like grain, corn, wheat, rice, and in particular, soy. Canines and felines have no biological grain requirement and dogs, in particular, can have problems digesting grains, so I don’t recommend feeding them to your pets. Depending on where you live, you might already know just how difficult it can be to find commercially available pet foods that are: Grain- free Made from human- grade ingredients Affordable This is another reason increasing numbers of pet owners are looking into homemade diets – it can be less expensive and less frustrating than trying to find affordable, high quality commercial pet food. The vast majority of commercial pet foods on the market contain chemicals, preservatives, emulsifiers and artificial colors that pet parents don’t want to subject their animals to. From an Ayurvedic perspective, in addition to inherited tendencies, several other key factors determine whether a person experiences an allergic reaction and how severe that reaction will be. These include the strength of the individual’s digestive fire, or inner resilience (known as agni), the quantity of allergen that enters the body, and a person’s current state of balance/imbalance in the doshas. Fortunately, there are techniques to strengthen our agni, avoid allergen exposure, and improve our state of doshic balance. By addressing all of these factors, we can help prevent allergies as well as keep them under control. Strengthening Agni. Ayurveda considers a strong agni, or digestive fire, one of the most important factors for our health. When our agni is strong, we can take in energy and information from our environment, extract whatever is beneficial to us, and eliminate everything we don’t need. In addition, when agni is burning brightly, our body won’t mount an aggressive response to foreign material such as pollen, but will instead remove it in a healthy, beneficial way. In other words, our body is more resilient to the changes in the environment. One way to keep our agni strong is to develop a regular meditation practice. When we calm the mind and body, we are less likely to respond to foreign “invaders” aggressively. We increase our ability to take in nourishment from our environment, as opposed to seeing them as threats. Other mindfulness practices, such as yoga and conscious breathing also strengthen agni. One breathing technique that is useful for strengthening agni is ujjayi, or ocean’s breath. Ujjayi (pronounced oo- jai) is an ancient yogic breathing technique that helps calm the mind and body. Ujjayi has a balancing influence on the entire cardiorespiratory system and releases feelings of irritation and frustration. Here is how to perform ujjayi breath: Take an inhalation that is slightly deeper than normal. With your mouth closed, exhale through your nose while constricting your throat muscles. If you are doing this correctly, you should sound like Darth Vader from Star Wars. You can also get the hang of this practice by practicing exhaling the sound haaaaah with your mouth open. Now make a similar sound with your mouth closed, feeling the outflow of air through your nasal passages. Once you have mastered this on the outflow, use the same method for the inflow breath, gently constricting your throat as you inhale. Another important way to strengthen agni is to eliminate ama, which is a Sanskrit word for toxicity. Ama includes both physical and emotional toxicity that accumulates in our physiology and can interfere with our natural healing. Reducing the Quantity of Allergens That Enter the Body. Another step to controlling and preventing allergy symptoms is to be mindful of how much of the aggravating allergen is in our environment and making conscious choices to eliminate them as much as possible. According to Ayurveda, we are in constant dynamic exchange with our external environment. When we put ourselves in an environment where we have high levels of exposure to an allergen, it becomes difficult to control symptoms, despite our best efforts. While it is sometimes difficult to completely avoid an allergen, you can protect yourself from direct contact with it by using a few Ayurvedic healing practices. One effective practice for prevention and treatment of allergy symptoms is using a neti pot to perform a gentle saline rinse. A neti pot is a small container with a spout that is placed in your nostril as you tip your head sideways, allowing warm salt water to flow in one nostril and out the other. By performing this saline rinse once or twice daily, you can flush out any foreign material that has come into your body through the nasal passages. After using the neti pot, it is very helpful to follow up with an Ayurvedic technique known as nasya, which consists of applying a few drops of oil to the nasal passages. The oil forms a protective layer on the nasal tissues and prevents allergens from directly attaching themselves to nasal membranes. A person’s primary dosha, or mind- body constitution, can often predict which allergy symptoms will manifest, so it’s important to understand your dosha type as well as your current imbalances. If you don’t know your primary dosha, you can find out by taking the Chopra Center’s Dosha Quiz here. In addition to understanding our primary dosha and individual tendencies, it is important to understand that each of us has all of the doshas within us and can therefore experience imbalances in of any of the doshas. Different types of allergy symptoms represent imbalances in different doshas. By recognizing this, we can more specifically guide the treatments. Kapha Allergy Symptoms. In Ayurveda, the typical allergy symptoms in the spring season – congestion, runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing – are described as an accumulation of the Kapha dosha, which is made up of earth and water elements. This leads to the feeling of “heaviness” and excessive mucus in the head and sinuses. Other symptoms are sluggishness and feeling tired. For the classic Kapha- type allergy symptoms, there are several simple and effective therapies that will relieve acute symptoms. Nasal Cleansing. As mentioned above, the neti pot is a useful tool in treating allergies. In addition to the benefits of removing allergens, from a doshic perspective, it is especially effective in decreasing Kapha in the head and sinuses. The use of nasya oil with invigorating scents, such as eucalyptus, camphor or juniper, can act as a natural decongestant, thus reducing the symptoms of heaviness. Other treatments that help relieve acute Kapha allergy symptoms include the use of pungent and bitter (astringent) herbs and spices to reduce Kapha, including ginger, cayenne, pepper, basil, cumin, cardamom, sage, turmeric, and cinnamon. An easy remedy is drinking hot honey water, or ginger lemon tea. A classical Ayurvedic herbal treatment to reduce Kapha is trikatu, which can be taken daily. In addition, treatment should be geared toward lightening the body in other ways, such as daily exercise and use of a dry sauna. Pitta Allergy Symptoms. When allergy symptoms occur in the summertime, the underlying source is often an out- of- balance Pitta dosha. Pitta is governed by the elements of water and fire, and in the summer, excess heat can produce inflammation in the respiratory tract or skin. These symptoms are usually rash, headache, burning or red eyes, and inflammation in the sinuses and airway (sinusitis, bronchitis). To pacify Pitta and the resulting allergy symptoms, Ayurveda recommends ingesting cooling herbs, such as coriander and cilantro. In addition, herbs such as guduchi, amalaki, and neem may be helpful. Ingestion of clarified butter, or ghee, as well as aloe, can calm the inflammatory reaction that is typical of Pitta imbalance. From a biochemical perspective, these herbs contain healthy anti- inflammatory and antioxidant properties that support our immune system. Vata Allergy Symptoms. When Vata is out of balance, the allergic symptoms include headache, wheezing, sneezing, and generalized muscle aches. These may be seen more typically in the fall as the air becomes cold and dry. This is due to the accumulation of the lighter elements of space and air in the mind- body physiology. Other manifestations of this Vata imbalance include dry cough, restlessness, and dry eyes. To balance the excess space and air elements, it is important to stay hydrated and drink warm liquids, such ginger tea with honey. To bring Vata back into balance, use calming herbs such as ashwagandha, which is also an immune modulator that calms the immune system’s response to allergens. Another useful tool in calming Vata is performing a self- massage, or abhyhanga. Find instructions for a self- massage here. The most nourishing and warming oil for balancing Vata is sesame. When our agni is restored, we avoid aggravating allergens and ama (toxicity) by making conscious choices, and we maintain balance of our internal energies, or doshas, we are less likely to experience ill health, such as allergies. An Ayurvedic Approach to Curing Acne, Part 2. In Part 1 of this blog, I explained how the overgrowth of bacteria is only an effect of underlying imbalances in the body, but not the ultimate cause of acne. Read Part 1 to understand the underlying causes of acne from an ayurvedic perspective, which can include impaired digestion and accumulation of toxins, and why traditional methods of combatting acne may not be working for you. Since pimples typically come in 2- , 3- , and 4- week cycles, you will need to follow this program for 3- 6 months to get permanent results. Step 1: Change your Diet. The health of your skin is directly related to your diet. In fact, one of the reasons that stress can cause sudden and severe outbreaks is because of the immediate impact that stress has on your digestive system. To help improve your digestion, follow the general dietary guidelines listed below. Remember, this is a long- term commitment and you have to keep these recommendations in mind for the long haul. Eat warm, soft, cooked foods. Avoid raw vegetables and salads. Drink beverages at room temperature or warm. Avoid cold drinks and frozen desserts (such as ice cream, popsicles, frozen yogurt, etc.)Reduce light, dry, crunchy food. Reduce spicy, sour, fried, and fermented foods. Reduce yogurt, alcohol, coffee, vinegar, tomatoes, onions, garlic, and cheese. Step 2: Strengthen Your Digestion. Many of the steps above will improve your digestion, but there is also an ayurvedic secret that really boosts your digestion and removes toxins. If you drink this tea regularly for 3- 6 months, you are going to notice many other health benefits in addition to beautiful skin. Directions. Boil 4- 5 cups of water in the morning. Add a half- teaspoon of the following seeds to the boiled water and continue to let steep for at least 1. Whole cumin seeds. Whole coriander seeds. Whole fennel seeds. Strain out the seeds and pour the liquid into a thermos. Sip the liquid throughout the day. Start fresh with a new batch of tea each morning. If the tea is too strong or if you experience some initial discomfort, reduce the amount of the seeds to a quarter- teaspoon of each for two weeks and then increase it back to a half- teaspoon of each. Step 3: Keep Your Pores Clean. Keeping your pores clear is important to preventing bacterial overgrowth. Pores get clogged with dead skin and sebum production. Sebum is an oily substance that helps to keep skin healthy when made in normal amounts. Over- production of sebum clogs the pores and creates the perfect environment for bacterial overgrowth. In the first month, you will need to use a clay facemask daily. As maintenance, you should use it 1- 2 times a week. Step 4: Detox Your Liver and Blood. Toxins accumulate in the liver and blood to cause chronic acne. Here are some simple ayurvedic methods for detoxing the liver and blood: Drink . Aloe vera juice is a natural way to remove toxins from your body, especially the liver and blood. If you have cystic acne, drink this twice a day, in the morning and bedtime, for 3 months. Remember to drink all liquids no colder than room temperature, so add a little bit of warm water to make the refrigerated aloe vera juice the right temperature. If you can’t tolerate the taste of aloe vera juice, add . Guggul is a widely used ayurvedic herb that helps to remove toxins from the body and improve digestion. Use turmeric in your cooking or as a supplement. Turmeric powder is a spice that is commonly used in Indian foods. It has anti- inflammatory and antiseptic properties. The easiest way to take turmeric is to add a pinch of it your food, but you can also take one tablet with meals. Do aerobic exercise 3- 4 times a week. The increased circulation and sweating that occurs with aerobic exercise naturally removes toxins from your body. Step 5: Reduce Your Stress. Let’s face it, when you are under stress, all of your good habits go out the window – you eat bad food, you stop exercising, you skip your supplements, and you generally stop taking care of yourself. Having a stress- management program in place before something happens will help you have the resilience to bounce back quickly – mentally, emotionally, and physically. There are several tools like meditation, yoga, exercise, and breathing exercises that will help you keep daily stress under control. Just choose one that resonates with you. A sudden stressful experience was definitely the underlying cause of my bout with adult acne. If I didn’t already have a long- standing meditation practice, the stress would have caused much more than just acne. I continued my meditation practice and incorporated all the other steps that I mentioned above, and within one month, the acne was under control and my skin was healing from the outbreak. I remember how vulnerable I felt when I developed acne. The world could literally read my emotional state on my face. When you are already feeling overwhelmed, having something that shows your stress to the world can really feel like the straw that breaks the camel’s back.
